Michoacán Fiesta

High in the mountains of Michoacán, the indigenous Purépecha people continue to practice their ancestral traditions. Each year, on January 1st, two men from each of the local barrios are responsible for organizing a grand fiesta. Their intent is to build community and involve the young people, who see it as an opportunity for courting. Some of their current citizens were born north of the border but the old ways appeal even to the young American Mexicans.
